Bottle

ca. 1760 – 1785

Bottles like this one were used by officers to store liquor or wine. The daily rations of an 18th century soldier included a 1/2 gill of whiskey or rum. On special occasions, General Washington issued extra rations. Due to the shortages at Valley Forge, an underground market flourished. Sutlers, soldiers, and officers were actively involved in bartering and selling liquor.
